Our makers, BAKU are located in the community of Santa Catarina Cuixtla, Oaxaca, where the practice of this trade has been developed through generations. Made using ancestral techniques with materials typical of the region, these pieces were born from the need to preserve and promote the tradition of wearing the huaraches and sandals with a contemporary and sustainable approach. Much of the materials used, such as leather and fur, are from the region. Approaching local farms dedicated to raising rabbits for human consumption, using furs which were initially discarded, closing the circle in a more sustainable way.
The use of recycled tires for the sole also helps with waste management in this community. The leather we use is tanned using organic plant-based methods, primarily zomacle and cinnamon bush bark.
