Description
BAKU makes beautiful pieces in the community of Santa Catarina Cuixtla, Oaxaca. Made by using ancestral techniques with materials typical of the region, these pieces were born from the need to preserve and promote the tradition of wearing the huaraches and sandals with a contemporary and sustainable approach. Much of the materials used, such as leather and fur, are from the region. Approaching local farms dedicated to raising rabbits for human consumption, using furs which were initially discarded, closing the circle in a more sustainable way.
The use of recycled tires for the sole also helps with waste management in this community. The leather we use is tanned using organic plant-based methods, primarily zomacle and cinnamon bush bark.
